Interpreting for the stage is more than simply translating a script into sign language. Interpreters strive to retain the flavour of the original work, incorporating the actors’ characterizations into an artistic offering. Besides having a chance to watch a live performance with theatrical interpretation during the workshop, participants will gain more insightes on interpreting for the stage from different perspectives through this workshop in two acts! 

Act 1 - Introduction for Interpreting on the Stage
Come peek behind the stage curtains and learn about interpreted theatre and concert performances from the perspective of the theatre staff. Participants will learn about Theatre Staff and crew positions and roles; theatre jargon; pre show preparations and logistical considerations. Through lecture, discussion and role play activities, participants will learn about the process of working with theatres from the moment a Deaf consumer makes a request for tickets all the way through the process to the final Curtain Call.

Act 2 - Trainslation of Scripts
Working in a theatre or in front of a camera can be exhilarating! It is a challenging task that begins well before the audience gathers or the curtain goes up and requires hours of rehearsal! THis seminar will introduce practical techniques for script translation through role playing. Participants will become part of the action as they work in small groups to prepare translations of scripts and other source materials.

About the Facilitator
Kevin Dyels (CI, CT) is a freelance sign language interpreter in the DC metropolitan area. He graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in Theater and is currently an owner of a performing arts interpreting company named First Chair Interpreted Productions. When not interpreting, Kevin mentors new interpreters, coordinates interpreters for various conferences and festivals, and works as a professional sound designer and disc jockey.

He has traveled to India, Romania and South Africa with Quest Visual Theatre, a performance group presents workshops and performances to deaf and hearing audiences. Kevin served as Production Manager for Deaf Way II overseeing over 50 performances offered as part of the International Arts Festival, featuring the world’s best deaf performing arts groups.

Kevin has presented workshops in Affect, Theatrical Interpreting, Team Building, and How to Access Performing Arts Venues.  He is a dynamic speaker whose workshops are often standing-room-only.
