Programme Description
May the world be filled full of dreams
Wish this life never deterred by all the wounds
In the 16th Century, Spanish poet Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra tells of a magical journey of a nobleman Don Quixote and his squire. For 400 years, there has not been any characterisation of their adventure: is it madness? Or tragic? More say it’s filled with dreams, making it impassioned.
While waiting for a trial by the Holy Inquisition, Cervantes tells his fellow prisoners a story. The passionate Don Quixote and Sancho, the squire, start their adventure in an imaginary kingdom where there is an ancient castle, a wicked sorcerer, and a noble lady. The journey is filled with absurdity and laughter, romance and excitement.
People ridicule him as a funny fool. Not deterred, his fights for justice gradually moved people around him; and so are Cervantes’ fellow prisoners. Maybe everybody has once held on to pursue one’s dream regardless of all consequences, yet how many people can uphold their pursuit with persistence and defy others’ opinions?
Is Don Quixote’s journey merely a laughable joke? Or is it where their hearts are?
Man of La Mancha is a musical combining the life of Cervantes and his classic novel, the Cantonese version of which will be staged in Hong Kong by Chung Ying. Famous lyricist Chow Yiu Fai and his team, Associate Artistic Director of City Contemporary Dance Company Dominic Wong and Millennium Youth Orchestra led by Dr Jennifer Ho will join the production and: To dream the impossible dream.
