ADAHK's artists with disabilities performed at Japan's 20th Anniversary Gold Concert
Invited by the Japan Barrier Free Association, ADAHK arranged artists with disabilties Yang Enhua (erhu) and Ding Yijie (violin), together with pianist Laurina Hong, to travel to Japan# for a special performance at the 20th Anniversary Gold Concert on 23 September 2023. They performed a trio, ‘Musical Lagoon,’* newly composed by Dr. Mui Kwong-chiu, a renowned prolific composer in Hong Kong. The concert gathered artists with disabilities from Japan, Korea, and Hong Kong. It is astonishing for artists with disabilities from different regions to gather under the same roof to break through language and other barriers via music. Music has the unique power to unite people across all boards globally and promote inclusion.
#The cultural exchange project is supported by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and The Swire Group Charitable Trust. *This new work is commissioned by Arts with the Disabled Association Hong Kong in 2023 with the sponsorship from CASH Music Fund. ADAHK's artist with disability, ShadowKid, participated in the dance exchange in Japan
The International Communication Centre for Persons with Disabilities (BiG-i) organised the ‘Breakthrough Journey Dance Camp’ in Osaka, Japan, for two days in August 2023. This event prompted a new way for participants to enjoy dance, combining different people and cultures to achieve inclusion and co-creation.
ADAHK was invited to the event, where our artist with disability, ShadowKid (To Chun-hing), co-led a dance workshop with professional choreographer Cyrus Hui. They explored dance using different senses, including perceiving movement, space and rhythm. They also shared their experiences with participants, demonstrating that dance could transcend all boundaries. Event poster was provided by BiG-i. |
Theatrical Interpretation Workshop Came to a Successful End
ADAHK organised the long-awaited Theatrical Interpretation Workshop and welcomed 24 registrants after 6 years. A total number of 10 participants were selected after the interview to complete a vigorous training of 39 hours of lectures and 9 hours of practicum between June and August. This workshop was taught by experienced instructors Suzanne Chan, Andy Lee and Michael Ng. The team also invited Mr Terence Chang, Senior Lecturer (Directing) and Postgraduate Programme Leader (Drama) from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, to teach the participants about embodying the characters and body movement. The examination was conducted in September and graded by 3 deaf and hard-of-hearing people, the aforementioned instructors and representatives from ADAHK. This new generation of Theatrical Interpreters will join the practicum in the future. We hope that everyone can support and appreciate their performances on different occasions in the future.
